“The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has an enormous and what feels a very fixed
reduction that eviscerates any notion of terroir and/or minéralité. The palate is predictably
moulded by the winemaking technique. Heavily reductive, and yet you cannot deny that there
is a brilliant silver thread of acidity and ample tension and penetration towards the finish. This
poses a dilemma: which way it goes depends on how that reduction plays out with bottle age.
Time will tell, but such is that spellbinding acidity that I’ll throw my chips on the table and
gamble that this will shake off that reduction and amaze anyone within its ambit. Like old
