“The 2016 Santenay Rouge Gravité is showing well from barrel, revealing aromas of smoky wild berries, spices, dark chocolate and toasty new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety palate with a juicy core of fruit and a sapid finish.

Husband and wife Anne-Marie and Jean-Marc Vincent together run this small but exceptional five-hectare Santenay domaine, a fine source of decidedly superior red and white Burgundy that deserves to be much better known. Training his canopies higher, planting at high densities—up to 14,000 vines per hectare—and working the soils, Vincent is proudly inspired by Saint-Aubin visionary Olivier Lamy, and his work in the vines translates to exceptional energy and concentration in the glass. Reds see a classic cuvaison of fruit, destemmed or whole cluster depending on the vintage, followed by élevage in 30-40% new wood. Whites are pressed long and comparatively firmly, followed by fermentation and élevage of increasingly protracted duration in wood. The last few vintages have been so consistently excellent that it is now fair to say that this address can be numbered among the Côte de Beaune’s best. And if the Vincents’ efforts can shine more light on Satenay’s merits, so much the better.
